Explore everything you need to know about CPT, from how to apply to tips for making the most of your work opportunities.

What is CPT?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows F-1 students to work off-campus in a job related to your major while still enrolled.

Eligibility Basics

Duration Requirement

You must have completed at least one academic year of study in the U.S.

Valid Status

You must be in valid F-1 status.

Relevance

Your job must be directly related to your major. CPT can't be used for minors or certificates.

Application Process

1

Get a job offer related to your major.

2

Submit your CPT request to your Designated School Official (DSO).

3

Receive a new I-20 with CPT authorization.

4

Start working only on or after the start date on your I-20.

Full-Time vs. Part-Time

  • Part-time: 20 hours/week or less.
  • Full-time: More than 20 hours/week.
  • 12 months of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility at the same degree level.

Unauthorized Work Warning

You cannot start work before the authorized date. This includes:

  • • Orientations
  • • Trainings
  • • Volunteering before start date

Common Mistakes

Mistake 01

Starting work before CPT is authorized on your I-20.

Mistake 02

Forgetting to re-apply if your job, employer, or dates change.

Mistake 03

Assuming one CPT approval covers multiple employers.

Quick Tips

Plan early, CPT approvals can take time.

Keep copies of all I-20s with CPT authorization.

Employers may not know CPT rules; be ready to explain.

New authorization is needed for each employer change.
