Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows F-1 students to work off-campus in a job related to your major while still enrolled.
Eligibility Basics
Duration Requirement
You must have completed at least one academic year of study in the U.S.
Valid Status
You must be in valid F-1 status.
Relevance
Your job must be directly related to your major. CPT can't be used for minors or certificates.
Application Process
Get a job offer related to your major.
Submit your CPT request to your Designated School Official (DSO).
Receive a new I-20 with CPT authorization.
Start working only on or after the start date on your I-20.
Full-Time vs. Part-Time
- Part-time: 20 hours/week or less.
- Full-time: More than 20 hours/week.
- 12 months of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility at the same degree level.
Unauthorized Work Warning
You cannot start work before the authorized date. This includes:
- • Orientations
- • Trainings
- • Volunteering before start date
